Welcome & Site Directions

Thank you for visiting my site. Run your mouse over the links on the left for information about that link. Select that link for more information & links to other spaces. I welcome your objective criticisms. Please do not hesitate in letting me know if a link is broken or you're not understanding the information. These are things I want to fix.

What do I offer?
I'm an IT professional & I will be developing specific video training guides to assist with using OSS programs. These may require more than one program to achieve a goal but it will be approached both visually & textually. I hope to eventually have a weekly update going here but for now it's just what is here.

Site Aims
I want you to become interested in open source, to like what I do, stay a while & perhaps employ me so I aim to make your experience on my site professional, informative, interesting, artistic & easy to navigate.
I'd also like to see Australia move towards Open Source & stop the waste of billion or so of exported dollars that go directly to the USA each year for no reason

 Linux

Linux

What is Linux?

Linux is an operating system along the lines of Windows or Mac & performs the same functions that Windows or Apple software performs. The functionality may be similar but the way it is done is very different. Linux is just another of those pet projects that has evolved into something grand.

What is so good about Linux?
Massive free, online support, stability, reliability, automatic patching, more regular updating & minimal malware. Linux has evolved from what was purely a text-based multi-user system into an easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI), multi-user system. It is kind of like getting the "basic vehicle based on Formula One" operating system with all the diamond-studded bells & whistles available. All these add-ons can be added if & when you want. The GUI for instance can be simple, simply beautiful or amazing.

Who uses Linux?
I do. Most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) around the world use Linux because of the ease of setting it up. Most of the people from poorer countries use Linux. China has its own version & Russians use it extensively to avoid the cost of licensing. Many European Governments are in the process of moving to Linux. Many countries also want to avoid the purported backdoor leaks inbuilt for the NSA, CIA & FBI.

 Graphics Editing

Graphics Editing

Graphics Editors

I've used a number of image editors over many years including Illustrator, Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, Xara.
Our logo has a 3D textual element & the dagger has been twisted radically. The whole image has been glassed & a number of other effects added.
This image, made from a photo of Mt Wellington in Tasmania has no lake at all

 Software Development

Software Development

Software Development
  • The Integrated Development Environment (IDE)
    • Eclipse is the standard IDE for Java it does come without a real GUI design utility
    • Netbeans however, has an extremely good quality WYSIWIG (what you see is what you get) designer called Faces
    • These days I generally use Eclipse unless I'm building a GUI & then its Netbeans
  • Operating Systems
    • I'm at home with both Linux & Windows
